She is also an animal rights activist, ecologist and widow of Indian politician Sanjay Gandhi. He is a minister in four governments and is the author of several books in the fields of etymology, law and animal welfare. Maneka Gandhi is a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Personal life
Maneka was born in Delhi in a Sikh family. His father was an Indian Army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Tarlochan Singh Anand and his mother was Amteshwar Anand. She went to Lawrence School and later to Lady Shri Ram College for Women. She is following German at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
She met Sanjay Gandhi for the first time at a cocktail party organized by Maneka General General Kapur to celebrate the marriage of his son Veenu Kapur in 1973. Maneka married Sanjay, the son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, September 23, 1974 ..
The Emergency saw the rise of Sanjay in politics and Maneka saw with his almost all the tours while the assured in the campaigns. It is often said that during his stay, Sanjay Gandhi exercised complete control over his mother and that the government was run by the Prime Minister's House rather than the Prime Minister's Office.
Maneka Gandhi founded the news magazine Surya, which later played a key role in promoting the party after a defeat in the 1977 elections that followed development.
He went to court to fight against an attempt by the government at the time to confiscate his passport and a price a landmark decision on personal freedom. Early life and career
Maneka's relationship with Indira Gandhi gradually disintegrated after Sanjay's death and they fought continuously. She was eventually chased from Safdarjung Street, the Prime Minister's residence after a collision with Indira. She founded the Rashtriya Sanjay Manch with Akbar Ahmed Dumpy. The party was mainly about youth empowerment and employment. He won four of the five elections in Andhra Pradesh.
Maneka Gandhi has published "The Complete Book of Muslim and Parsif Names", in recognition of her husband's Zoroastrian faith.
Maneka Gandhi challenged Uttar Pradesh's Amethi constituency for the 1984 general election for Loksabha, but lost face to Rajiv Gandhi. In 1988, she joined V. P. Singh's Janata Dal and became the general secretary. In November 1989, Gandhi won a first election in Parliament and became Minister of State.
